Cool Brothas

Ebony Magazine’s August 2008 issue contains the “25 Coolest Brothers of All Time”. I skimmed the list while waiting in line at Walgreen’s and it’s pretty accurate. I saw Malcolm X, Bob Marley, and Adam Clayton Powell to name a few. I don’t know why Jay-Z is there, he wouldn’t be on my list.

There are 8 different covers, I only saw the Marvin Gaye cover…but I’m sure the others are out there somewhere.

Just in case somebody out there doesn’t know who those guys on the covers are…here’s the list:

  • Jay-Z
  • Barack Obama
  • Denzel Washington
  • Marvin Gaye (Dag, Marvin was foine!!)
  • Prince
  • Samuel L. Jackson
  • Muhammad Ali
  • Billy Dee Williams

Not bad Ebony, not bad at all.

Smooches!

  • Twin Sis!!!! Welcome back mayne!

Wasn’t Marvin gorgeous?! Coming to check out your bloggage and the video. :-)

  • What’s up sis!!!! Great minds think alike. . . well, sort of – I just posted a Marvin Gaye video! And, yes, ma’am – that brotha was fine as a mother (shut yo mouth!) Thanks for the love!

  • Danielle: Sis they were smoking something!

Hey Mr. DJ! I forgot about Franklin Ajaye! I guess Coolness is in the eye of the beholder too. :-)

  • Franklin Ajaye should’ve been on there too. I am wondering who made up the list. Was it done by committee? And if so who made up that committee. “Coolness” is a generational thing I think. To me Jay-Z is not “Cool” but I don’t know him so I would be wrong to judge…actually..come to think of it I wonder if anyone on the list “committee” actually “knew” any of the people they listed. I wonder because perceived personas are a lot different (in many cases) than a person’s actual “Coolness” yanno?

  • These lists are always weird. Why some make it and others don’t is beyond me. No Arthur Ashe or Richard Pryor? Someone was smokin’ that stuff in the Ebony offices.

  • Hey Rawdawg: I was thinking something similar. They could’ve left the rappers off, especially Snoop and Jay-z. (Tupac can stay!)

Arthur Ashe and Richard Pryor should’ve been included. Roy Ayers should’ve been in there too.

I guess if we want something done right we have to do it ourselves.

  • wonder why Richard Pryor and Authur Ashe didnt make the cover, but i think too much, no writer huh
